Muammar Memilih Jalan Sendiri

Malam telah merangkak jauh. Perlahan. Sebentar lagi pagi terjangkau. Hujan rintik-rintik di luar. Maludin yang letih masih tidak dapat tidur. Sepanjang malam menjelang pagi itu ia tetap terjaga.

Risiko seperti ini tidak pernah terbayangkannya dua puluh tahun lalu. Ia, istrinya, Maryam, dan putranya, Muammar, datang ke negeri yang jauh ini untuk memulai kontrak kerjanya dengan sebuah lembaga pemerintah. Ketika itu Muammar baru berusia dua tahun. Adiknya, Fatur, lahir di negeri yang jauh ini dua tahun kemudian, disusul oleh Fayed dua tahun setelah itu.

Bagi Maludin hidup di negeri baru ini jauh lebih menyenangkan daripada di kota yang ditinggalkannya. Bukan saja karena pendapatannya lebih besar daripada yang dulu diperolehnya sebagai guru SMA di kotanya, tetapi juga karena ia berdomisili di lingkungan permukiman yang lebih baik, tidak sumpek dan bersih serta berbagai hal lain seperti dekatnya jarak kantor dan rumahnya, transportasi umum yang selalu tepat waktu dan dapatnya Maryam sepenuhnya menjadi ibu rumah tangga tanpa harus membantu Maludin mencari nafkah dengan menjahit pakaian anak-anak.

Waktu berjalan seirama dengan peredaran bumi mengitari titik pusat tata surya. Perjalanan waktu itu sering luput dari perhatian. Maludin dan Maryam baru menyadari bahwa mereka telah empat tahun tinggal di negeri yang jauh ini, ketika Muammar memasuki usia sekolah. Semula suami istri itu menduga beban ekonomi akan meningkat dengan masuknya Muammar ke sekolah.

Ternyata tidak. Muammar dapat belajar tanpa biaya apa pun. Bahkan, Maludin tak perlu mengeluarkan sepeser pun untuk membayar ongkos bus yang setiap hari mengantar dan menjemput anaknya ke sekolah. Hidup sehari-hari pun semakin menyenangkan buat Maludin dan Maryam. Pada saat tiba giliran bagi Fatur dan Fayed untuk bersekolah, perasaan senang Maludin tetap tidak berkurang, karena kedua anak ini pun tidak membebaninya dengan biaya sekolah.

Sekolah gratis ini dilalui ketiga anak Maludin dalam kurun waktu yang cukup lama, sehingga Maludin terkejut ketika anaknya harus membayar uang kuliah untuk dapat belajar di perguruan tinggi. Beban pertama dalam dunia pendidikan ini pun akhirnya tak perlu disandangnya, karena Muammar dapat memperoleh pinjaman dari bank mana pun, dengan jaminan ayahnya. Kelonggaran yang diberikan merupakan pertolongan yang tidak terbayangkan sebelumnya, karena Muammar diizinkan untuk membayar pinjamannya setelah ia bekerja, seusai menyelesaikan pendidikannya di perguruan tinggi.

Tanpa disadari Maludin dan Maryam, Muammar, Fatur, dan Fayed melebur dengan sempurna ke dalam kondisi lingkungan mereka. Satu-satunya kehidupan yang mereka kenal adalah kehidupan di sekitar mereka itu dan semua nilai yang melekat di sana. Tak ada yang perlu dikhawatirkan sebenarnya, jika mereka bertiga masih mau mendengarkan suara ayah dan ibu mereka, suara yang mengandung makna hidup, jalan yang tidak berliku, tetap berpijak pada tempat asal dan keyakinan yang harus dipegang teguh di mana pun berada.

Namun, mendengarkan suara ayah dan ibunya itulah yang sangat sukar bagi Muammar, berbeda dengan Fatur dan Fayed. Kedua putra Maludin yang disebutkan belakangan ini masih tetap anak-anak yang menilai suara ayah dan ibu mereka sebagai pemandu jalan agar tidak terpeleset di kegelapan. Ini menyejukkan perasaan kedua orang tua mereka, yang tetap berpegang teguh kepada keyakinan yang mereka kenal sejak masa kanak-kanak.

Karena itu, alangkah terkejutnya Maludin dan Maryam, juga Fatur dan Fayed, ketika pada suatu hari Muammar mengatakan akan membawa pacarnya menginap di kamarnya di rumah mereka. Guntur menggelegar bagi Maludin dan Maryam. Bencana apa yang akan dibawa anak sulung mereka itu? Itulah pertanyaan yang menyerbu ke dalam benak Maludin dan Maryam. Mungkin pertanyaan itu pula yang hinggap di kepala Fatur dan Fayed.

Maludin dengan halus meyakinkan Muammar bahwa berdasarkan keyakinan yang mereka peluk, tindakan yang akan dilakukan Muammar itu adalah salah. Bahkan, agama apa pun tidak akan membenarkan hal itu. Mendengar keterangan ayahnya, Muammar menjelaskan, Joyce, pacarnya itu, ingin menginap di rumah mereka karena ingin mengenal lebih jauh Maludin, Maryam, Fatur, dan Fayed.

Maludin kembali meyakinkan Muammar, kalau ingin mengenal keluarga mereka lebih jauh silakan saja Joyce berkunjung setiap hari. Kemudian Maludin yang bertanya, mengapa Joyce ingin mengenal mereka lebih jauh. Kan dia hanya teman akrab Muammar. Bolehlah kalau anak sulung Maludin itu menyebut Joyce pacarnya. Tapi Muammar harus ingat bahwa Joyce belum menjadi pacarnya secara resmi.

Mendengar kalimat-kalimat yang meluncur dengan lancar dari mulut ayahnya, Muammar tersenyum. Masih sekuno ini ayahku, katanya dalam hati. Bukan hanya ayah, tetapi juga ibu dan kedua adikku, kata hatinya melanjutkan. Ini harus diterobos untuk membuka jalan baru. Pemikiran seperti itu muncul tiba-tiba dalam kepala Muammar. Itulah yang dilakukannya keesokan harinya.
